SOLD Hydroxyl-herderite, [Towne's Workings] Mt. Apatite Pegmatite District
45 x 47 x 33 mm.
SOLD..We are honored to have Vandall T. King write this description of the specimen for us.... "This is an important specimen from a historically-rich locality. This specimen was probably produced in 1898 and, at the time, was probably the world’s record size for the species. For example, Frederick Genth was only able to acquire a crystal weighing one third of a gram during the great hydroxyl-herderite war. Mineralogists were using this mineral to prove the hotly contested theory that hydroxyl could substitute for fluorine. Genth wrote to George Kunz on September 27, 1884 about his desire for this mineral: “I expected that I had already about $46 – but [Dr. Theodor Schuchardt’s international check] was not honored; otherwise I would have invested the amount in Herderites.” Genth was racing against time to publish his chemical analysis before Dana, Penfield, or other scientists would scoop his discovery. The premium on herderite is revealed when George Kunz was buying a wholesale lot from the miner in Maine, Nathan Perry: “I will keep the Herderite and Muscovite thus our acct. stands as follows. I think on the first lot $105.95.” While we don’t know the number or sizes of the specimens in the first lot. The second lot was an individual hydroxyl-herderite specimen for $25 – a princely extravagant price in the time period for any museum-grade display piece and the specimen was destined for resale! The $25 price tag would have been a reasonable month's wages for a wage-earner in the period. In one of the few times when sizes of specimens are revealed, Perry offered two lesser specimens that were ½ inch in size, presumably including matrix, for $10. As hydroxyl-herderite became in even greater demand, in 1885, Perry continued to sell Maine minerals to Kunz including one lot for $500 that seems to have been mostly hydroxyl-herderite. The hydroxyl-herderite war was finally won by Samuel Penfield in 1892 when he felt he had conclusively proven that hydroxyl did, indeed, substitute for fluorine. He named the species we now call hydroxyl-herderite based on Maine material as well. By this time, the Mount Apatite District was getting fairly well depleted. The fate of the hydroxyl-herderite being bought was the test tube, and few specimens survived except for those priced out of the range of the feuding mineralogists. This specimen seems to have originated in John Towne’s 1898 discovery bearing the finest crystals of herderite ever found on Mount Apatite. Undoubtedly referring to specimens from this find, Gratacap said in 1912 of Clarence Bement’s hydroxyl-herderites in the American Museum of Natural History: “They are the despair of mineral collectors.” Even in 1907, it was newsworthy to mention hydroxyl-herderite discoveries that were “in short prisms, few of them over one-fourth inch long”. Unfortunately, the actual record-size crystal of the time period is unknown, but a careful survey of the specimens in the Harvard, Northeastern, and Yale University mineral collections, as well as the American Museum of Natural History’s collections do not reveal bigger or better specimens. (See illustrations of the best of these in Mineralogy of Maine.) This is a treasure specimen from a long-forgotten controversy, but is certainly one of America’s significant classic minerals.
Part of the beauty of this specimen is its visual richness and the specimen is displayable in a variety of orientations. The major crystal has a magnificent and prominent fish-tail twin, not usually as well-developed on lesser specimens, although always desired. The major crystals are free of damage and have an usually high luster for the species. This is a grand champion with an outstanding provenance.

...SOLD Calcite, Cobaltoan. 30% Off, Was $1000.00, Your cost $700.00 Bou Azzer, Bou Azzer District, Tazenakht, Ouarzazate Province, Souss-Massa-Draâ Region, Morocco
110 x 40 x 70 mm
Most of us would agree that the "bubble-gum" pink of Morocco's cobaltoan calcites is unique in the mineral world....no other mineral species even approaches the color intensity of these wonderful calcites. We also have, in our midst, one of those fleeting opportunities to select a specimen from a seemingly abundant supply of material coming out of Morocco...but I believe we should learn the lesson taught to us by the fluorites of Illinois, the mimetites of Mexico, the calcites of Elmwood, and scores of other missed opportunities where we all " waited". Lets not repeat history...this will end, and soon! This specimen was obviously cut from a seam in a very richly populated vug of crystals, with superb color, and excellent luster.

..SOLD..Creedite & Fluorite Navidad Mine (Mina Navidad), Rodeo, Mun. de Rodeo, Durango, Mexico
72 x 60 x 60 mm
A new find of gorgeous orange creedite crystals with purple fluorite crystals attached to the terminations. It's sad that the finest and most unique specimens are available in the smallest quantities, and of course, get absorbed by the market immediately. From the minute quantities, we must eliminate the damaged pieces, and the end result is perhaps a handful of specimens. Such is the case with these wonderful creedites, of which there were not more than a few fine specimens available. Consequently, they command fairly high prices. Fortunately, this specimens is still within the price range of the serious collector with an eye for aesthetics! (EEL.)

..SOLD..Rhodochrosite, Botryoidal. Oppu mine, Naka-Tsugaru-gun, Aomori Prefecture, Tohoku Region, Honshu Island, Japan
145 x 165 x 35 mm.
A super fine old classic that was mined around 1910. I love these botryoidal rhodo's. They are, in my opinion, the most exotic form of rhodochrosite, and to find one with no damage, like this one, is no easy trick. Most every other specimen I have seen from this locality was the typical " flat plate" with no relief. The " highs and lows" of this surface make it very special.

Crystal size 19 mm. long. 46 x 45 x 45mm Marcus Budil Collection
Transbaikalia rubellites are far from common, however, the quantity of single crystals greatly out numbers the matrix examples. What makes this specimen so special is the association of the bright, cherry red crystal with the feldspar, albite and muscovite. A well balanced matrix, with a gem crystal aesthetically situated on it, captures the eye of the observer in ways that he cannot articulate...it just " seems right". Such is the case here. An excellent miniature that has it all.

228 x 181 x 52 mm.
An amethyst formation, that is an undulating flower-like form, and is quite unusual. The specimen has two distinct generations of amethyst. One is a lavender colored, and is somewhat irridescent, and superimposed on it is a layer of deep purple, gemmy crystals. Many of the crystals are complex. One small "dime size" area that appears to be a contact is present at one side.

A cluster of intergrown crystals, with a extremely well-developed crystal elevated from the specimen's mass 1 centimeter above the plane of flat, but larger crystals. The intense lemon yellow color, and luster, and vivid intensity, is typical of radioactives, but rarely as vibrant as this one. My belief is that this specimen is certainly among the more important examples from this locality.

Andradite Kayes Region, Mali
130 x 80 x 60 mm.
Every so often, a find pops up that is truly amazing. Such is the case with this pocket of andradite var. melanite that was discovered 8 months ago in the Kayes Region. The specimens range in size from thumbnail to large cabinets, and the common characteristic seems to be the complexity of the crystallography: interpenetration, fascinating surfaces of " trigons", some at the surface, and some appearing to " collapse" below the surface. The color range is olive green to dark brown, to rust colored groups, which, under photographic lights, take on a auburn color. The crystals can be huge...up to 50 mm on edge!.Dr. Wendell Wilson indicated that the surfaces which exhibit the unusual forms are sometimes referred to as " parquet", but there is no official term for them. The exciting part of this discovery is that there is at last sufficient quantity that a collector can find a fine specimen in most any price range. This specimen seems to have it all: color, crystallographic complexity, balance, and freedom from damage.

Annabergite KM-3 Mine, Lavrion, Milnes, Lavrion, Attiki Prefecture, Greece
35 x 22 x 23 mm.
Annabergite is the nickel analogue of Erythrite. This characteristic color is easily noticeable and was used to spot veins of nickel-bearing ore. Annabergite, or "Nickel Bloom" as it is called by miners, is a weathering product of nickel-containing minerals such as niccolite, NiAs. Where weathered cobalt and nickel ores are found, both erythrite, Co3(AsO4)2-8(H2O) and annabergite are important markers. Erythrite, called "Cobalt Bloom", is bright red-purple and is isostructural with annabergite. Typical of this locality, the crystals have an excellent luster and bright, mint-green color unmatched in any other species I am aware of. The crystals are well formed on the c-axis, and contrast beautifully on the limonite matrix. Some say that a prerequisite for rarity is ugliness. I find that to be untrue, as some of the uranium minerals are simply gorgeous, as is this species. | | | |
